ReadingRight Parent Workshops

(Pre-K - Grade 5)

ReadingRight parent involvement consultants, Laura Beaver and Jill Nolen, will conduct a one hour presentation for your parents. Parents will walk away with research based reading strategies they can easily inforporate into their child's nightly homework routine. These large group literacy workshops are based on the findings of the National Reading Panel and target pre-reading, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and/or test taking strategies designed for the home. Grade appropriate literacy strategies are not only shared in parent friendly terms, but are modeled and practiced with parents. Home Literacy Cards summarize the strategies shared and make it easy for parents to implement effective strategies into reading time at home. Parents will be empowered to make a positive impact on their child's academic success both now and in the future. Offer this workshop as a stand alone or as part of your next PTO or parent involvement event.

Presentation fee:

• $500 plus travel (additional fee if overnight stay is required)

• Home Literacy Cards: $1.00 per child

Customize your event by selecting one of the following topics and targeted grade level(s). Combinations of strategies and groups are available upon request.

Reading Readiness (PreK-K)

Parents can develop reading readiness skills with a variety of simple to use strategies and activites before, during and after reading a story.

Word Attack Skills (Grades K-2)

Parents learn to use strategies other than “sound it out” to help their children figure out unknown words.

Fluency (Grades 1-2 or 3-5)

Parents learn step-by-step strategies to enhance their child’s fluency at home and gain insight into what vital role fluency plays in comprehension.

Vocabulary (Grades K-5)

Parents can expand vocabulary development of unfamiliar words or words with multiple meanings by using the “Flag It!” strategy.

Comprehension (Grades K-2 or 3-5)

Parents can strengthen comprehension and higher order thinking skills while reading to their children, when listening to them read aloud or during independent reading.

Test Taking Strategies (Grades 3-5)

Parents can help children learn to use three essential test taking strategies when completing multiple-choice reading tests. Connecting these strategies to a familiar shopping experience makes it easier for children to remember to use them on test day!

"Jill Nolen and Laura Beaver presented an outstanding program to our parents at our recent Title I Parent Meeting. Their presentation focused on how to help the child to become a better reader and was a huge hit with both parents and teachers!!! I certainly consider their presentation to be the best we have offered our parents."
